Defitelio, also known as Defibrotide, is a medication used to treat and prevent hepatic veno-occlusive disease, or VOD — a severe liver complication that can occur after bone marrow transplantation.
For children at high risk of VOD, starting Defitelio therapy promptly has been shown to significantly reduce post-transplant mortality. In cases where the risk is exceptionally high, Defitelio is prescribed as a preventative measure.
Very few medications can treat or prevent severe VOD — Defitelio is the most established option available. Right now, Podari Life is working to secure 5 vials of Defitelio for children currently in post-transplant care.
